Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about macadamia nuts, explained.
Basics & Buying
What do macadamia nuts taste like?
Hawaii grown macadamia nuts are known for a rich, buttery flavor with a mild sweetness and a very smooth texture. This delightful combination makes them versatile as a favorite sweet, spicy or salty snack and they work great in baking.
Are macadamia nuts healthy?
Yes, macadamia nuts are considered a nutritious snack option. They're energy-dense and rich in monounsaturated fats, AKA the "good" fats similar to olive oil. They also have protein and fiber that aid in digestion, and offer essential vitamins such as vitamin E and minerals like magnesium.
How many macadamia nuts should you eat per day?
A serving size is about 1 ounce (28g), or approximately 10-12 mac nuts. Consuming a handful daily can provide health benefits while avoiding an excessive calorie intake.
How do you ensure freshness?
On the Big Island, our extended growing season allows for a very long harvest. To ensure the highest quality, we process our nuts several times a month and store them in their shells to optimize freshness until just before they are cracked.
Do you sell both raw and roasted macadamia nuts?
We do not sell raw unprocessed macadamia nuts. Our nuts go through a brief food safety roast. Including our large pieces, small pieces, and macadamia flour. While these are ideal for baking, many of our customers also enjoy them as a snack. Both versions have their advantages: our minimally processed nuts retain more nutrients and enzymes, which may aid in digestion and have a softer texture, while roasted nuts offer enhanced flavor and a crunchier bite. Ultimately, the best choice depends on your personal preference.
What’s the difference between roasted and dry-roasted macadamias?
Roasted macadamias are often cooked in oil. Our nuts are dry-roasted without oil, maintaining more of their original flavor and nutrients while making a tasty snack. We offer both plain nuts and a wide array of gourmet flavored dry roasted macadamia nuts.
Are mac nuts keto / low-carb / paleo friendly?
No worries! As long as we haven't shipped out your order yet, just reach out to us by replying to the confirmation email you received for your order and we'll take care of you.
Why are macadamia nuts so expensive?
The cost of macadamia nuts is largely due to the labor that goes into cultivating and harvesting them from trees. The delicate process from tree to roasting requires careful handling and proper storage. On average, macadamia trees take 7-10 years to produce a viable crop and they only grow in specific tropical and subtropical climates. Nuts fall to the ground when they’re ready to be harvested and many are collected by hand. Plus, the shells are extremely hard (requiring specialized machinery to crack).
Nutrition & Health
Are macadamia nuts good for your heart?
Yes, according to experts, the combination of healthy fats (mainly monounsaturated), fiber, and antioxidants in macadamia nuts can contribute to lower cholesterol levels and reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases. See this Science Direct article for more.
Are macadamia nuts high in fat? Is it “good fat”?
While they are high in fat, most of this is monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which are commonly called "good fats." These types of fats can help improve cholesterol levels by reducing LDL ("bad") cholesterol while increasing HDL ("good") cholesterol.
Do macadamia nuts help with cholesterol?
- The healthy fat profile in macadamia nuts aids in managing cholesterol levels effectively, promoting heart health by lowering harmful LDL cholesterol and elevating protective HDL cholesterol. See this NIH article for more.
Are macadamia nuts anti-inflammatory?
Macadamia nuts contain antioxidants and polyphenols that have been shown to possess anti-inflammatory properties, potentially benefiting overall health by reducing inflammation in the body. See this NIH article for more details.
Do macadamia nuts help with weight loss or weight gain?
Despite their high caloric content, macadamia nuts can be a healthy part of a balanced diet due to their ability to promote fullness and satiety.
Are macadamia nuts high in calories?
Yes, they contain approximately 200 calories per ounce (28g), so while they offer many health benefits, we recommend them as part of a balanced diet.
Do macadamia nuts contain omega-3, omega-6 , omega-7 or omega-9?
According to the World Macadamia Organisation, they have the highest level of monounsaturated fats (MUFAs) of all nuts in the form of Omega-9 and Omega-7. Omega-9 is known to reduce inflammation, improve heart function through lowering of ‘bad cholesterol’ levels, and support overall wellness. Research is emerging for the more rare Omega-7 and there are correlations with lower blood sugar levels and healthier insulin responses. Macadamias have polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in the form of Omega-3 and Omega-6. The ratio of 6:1 (Omega-6: Omega-3) found in macadamias is an excellent balance for optimal health. Cooking & Usage
What are macadamia nuts used for?
Macadamia nuts are versatile and can be enjoyed as a standalone snack or incorporated into various dishes such as baked goods, salads, and desserts to add flavor and nutritional value. We also make Macbutter, a honey macadamia nut butter spread which is a great alternative to other nut butters.
Are macadamia nuts good for baking?
Their buttery taste and rich texture make mac nuts an excellent addition to cookies, cornbread, cakes, and muffins, enhancing both the flavor and nutritional profile of these treats. We also make a pancake mix which is a great breakfast option.
Can you cook with macadamia nut oil?
Unrefined (cold-pressed) macadamia nut oil has a high smoke point of approximately 390° F - 413° F. This high, stable smoke point makes it suitable for high-heat cooking methods, including stir-frying, roasting, searing, and baking, while retaining its nutty flavor.
Do macadamia nuts need to be soaked?
It’s not necessary, because macadamia nuts are naturally low in phytic acid content, which some believe inhibits nutrient absorption. Mac nuts contain very low levels of phytic acid compared to most other nuts, making them a highly digestible, nutrient-dense option. Unlike almonds or walnuts, which are high in antinutrients, macadamias are considered low in phytic acid, lectins, and oxalates, allowing for better absorption of essential minerals.
Origin & Sourcing
Where did macadamia trees originate?
Native to Australia, macadamia trees were introduced to Hawaii in the late 19th century and have since become a significant part of Hawaiian agriculture, alongside their growing popularity worldwide.
Are macadamia nuts grown in Hawai'i, Australia, or Africa?
Macadamias are cultivated extensively in Hawaii, Australia, China, South Africa, and Kenya, with these regions being major global producers due to favorable climates for the orchards. All of our Ahualoa Family Farms mac nuts are Hawaii-grown.
Are macadamia nuts sustainable?
Our macadamia nuts are grown right here on the Big Island, primarily in our district of Hamakua. Sustainable practices in macadamia farming include integrated pest management and soil conservation techniques, which help minimize environmental impact while maintaining productive harvests. We reuse our mac nut husks and shells to retain moisture, suppress weeds and provide nutrients to our trees. Hawaii provides the ideal climate for the mac nut trees to thrive. No irrigation is required thanks to the rainfall. These ideal growing conditions result in abundant and hearty crops.
Do you support food security efforts?
We promote food security by buying from local growers and participating in farmers markets throughout the island.
